Blanfon usually arrives a SIS package that contains a GDR file. For example, one SymbOS/Blanfon variant drops the file Panic.gdr in the path C:\system\fonts.
GDR files are then Symbian OS Bitmap Font File. They contain a set of definitions that describe how fonts will appear in the phone’s text and displays. In the case of SymbOS/Blanfon, the fonts are defined to be transparent or blank, making all text strings, displays, and captions in the compromised phone disappear.
SymbOS/Blanfon affects phones running the Symbian S60 platform. Some phones affected by SymbOS/Cabir include the following:
Nokia 3650, 3600
Nokia 3660, 3620
Nokia 6600
Nokia 6620
Nokia 7610
Nokia 7650
Nokia N-Gage
Panasonic X700
Sendo X
Siemens SX1
Manual Disinfection
To manually restore the phone’s fonts, it is necessary to copy a new GDR file into the path C:systemfonts. Once a new GDR file is installed, reboot the machine and delete the GDR file dropped by SymbOS/Blanfon.
